The Power of Meditation
More and more people are now
turning to meditation as a way to relax and recharge their batteries.
Those of us with long enough memories will
remember the time of hippies and flowers and incense. The Beatles with the Maharishi and a strong interest in meditation stirring
across the country. It was highly fashionable to be seen doing our ‘OM’s and throwing flowers at people.
Though the hippies are gone, the practice
of meditation has grown and flourished. We all want to find some meaning and significance in our lives and people have long
turned to meditation for help and inner guidance. Meditation has ceased to be the domain of the weird and wacky now.
Science also has taken an interest
and has shown that meditation in its various forms is actually good for us. It
is now generally accepted that meditation techniques can be an important aid in managing stress, lowering blood pressure and
reducing other undesirable effects of the modern life style.
Rajan
Samra has been teaching meditation for 15 years and runs regular classes. He believes that in our modern day, fast-paced
life we do need to find time to slow down and connect with a deeper sense of self. At least, meditation will help us to relax
and release the tensions from the daily grind. Beyond that it becomes the doorway into connecting with our own power.
“The most obvious effects
of Meditation are relaxation and increased energy. Many find their ability to concentrate increased. Quite a few report improvements
of their general well-being.” On this level, Meditation has been shown
to have good effects on headaches, backaches, insomnia and other stress-related symptoms.
Rajan adds “The main point is that
we begin to find a level of meaning that we have been searching for. There is no need to go up to the Himalayas
to sit in a cave to find yourself. You can if you want to…hanging out with the yogis can be fun! But you may as well
sit in silence in one of my classes and save yourself the airfare.”
Some people are put off by thinking
that meditation is a load of mumbo-jumbo with people doing silly chants and waving incense sticks and crystals. Meditation
is really very simple and highly practical and very easy to learn.
“In the end all we are asking you
to do is reverse that old injunction ‘Don’t just sit there, do something’ In meditation we urge that you
let go of all that rushing around keeping busy and to sit in peace. ‘Don’t just do something, sit there!’
Then you can find levels of calm and tranquillity that you may have thought lost to you. The effects really are profound and
powerful.”
The meditation instructions on our
